The Fleur-de-lys
General history records that the Fleur-de-lys was given to King Clovis of France, when he was losing a particular battle. He decided to pray to his wife´s God (he of course was a "pagan") and asked that in the name of Christ he might win this war. An angel is said to have descended and handed him a Lily, and hence it became the symbol of France, and of course he won the battle, and converted, making the lily his symbol.
It is now a notable emblem of monarchy. In North America the Fleur-de-lys is often associated with areas formerly settled by France. It is also the emblem of the Swiss Municipality of Schlieren, Zörich. It appears on military insignia and is the logo of many different organizations. During the 20th century it was adopted by various Scouting organizations worldwide for their badges. Architects and designers use it alone or as a repeated motif in a wide range of contexts.
The real story, however, lies elsewhere. There are documented examples of the Fleur-de-lys in Egypt and Rome, but first of all in ancient Israel. It was emblazoned on the side of the Ark of the Covenant. Research shows that it was first represented by the Bee. The Bee was used as a symbol for the House of Joseph (of Egypt). As time went on, it was stylized to become a more neutral symbol, but in essence it boils down to the following:
It represents the House of Israel, and the mark of the Abrahamic Covenant. It has been used as a symbol for French and English Royalty, descending from King David, and holding the right to the throne, through that bloodline. Throughout history, it has been used as a symbol of freedom by the Scots, the Jacobites, the Stuarts, Egyptian Royalty, and the Counts of Brittany.
In The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints it is known as Deseret, the Honey Bee, and the workers of the Kingdom of God. It stands for wisdom, striving for perfection, the best that we can offer the world, and eternal life. It is said in legend that where you see the Fleur-de-lys prominently claimed and displayed, there you will find the Holy Grail, the San-Greal, or the rightful heirs to the throne of Israel.
